Background of the Study
Family planning plays a crucial role in improving maternal and child health by preventing unintended pregnancies, reducing maternal and child mortality, and allowing individuals and families to achieve desired family sizes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). In many developing countries, including Nigeria, the use of contraceptives is a key strategy for improving reproductive health. Nasarawa State, located in central Nigeria, faces a significant challenge in promoting family planning practices due to cultural beliefs, lack of awareness, and limited access to reproductive health services (Adeniran & Garba, 2024).
Despite government efforts to increase awareness about family planning, the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) remains low in many parts of Nigeria, including Nasarawa State. The lack of education and awareness regarding the benefits of contraceptives, combined with socio-cultural barriers, often leads to a reluctance in adopting modern family planning methods. Factors such as misconceptions about contraceptives, religious opposition, and gender dynamics contribute to the low utilization of family planning services (Oche et al., 2023).
This study aims to investigate the impact of family planning awareness on contraceptive use in Nasarawa State, assessing the relationship between knowledge of family planning and actual contraceptive use among women of reproductive age. By identifying the key factors that influence contraceptive adoption, the study will provide valuable insights to inform policy and intervention strategies aimed at increasing contraceptive use and improving reproductive health in the state.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various initiatives aimed at promoting family planning in Nigeria, Nasarawa State continues to experience a low contraceptive use rate. This low uptake of contraceptives has contributed to high levels of unintended pregnancies, maternal morbidity, and mortality in the region (Musa et al., 2024). A significant factor in this issue is the lack of adequate family planning awareness, as many women are unaware of the different contraceptive methods available or are misinformed about their safety and effectiveness (Adamu & Ajao, 2023). There is limited research on the specific impact of family planning awareness campaigns on contraceptive use in Nasarawa State, which makes it difficult to design targeted interventions.
The study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the relationship between family planning awareness and contraceptive use in Nasarawa State. Understanding the barriers to family planning adoption and the role of awareness programs in overcoming these barriers will help improve access to contraceptive services and enhance reproductive health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of family planning awareness among women of reproductive age in Nasarawa State.
2. To evaluate the impact of family planning awareness on contraceptive use in Nasarawa State.
3. To identify the socio-cultural and economic factors that influence contraceptive use in Nasarawa State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of family planning awareness among women of reproductive age in Nasarawa State?
2. How does family planning awareness influence contraceptive use in Nasarawa State?
3. What socio-cultural and economic factors affect contraceptive use in Nasarawa State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between family planning awareness and contraceptive use in Nasarawa State.
2. Women with higher levels of family planning awareness are more likely to use modern contraceptives compared to those with lower levels of awareness.
3. Socio-cultural factors, such as religious beliefs and gender roles, negatively influence contraceptive use in Nasarawa State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on assessing the impact of family planning awareness on contraceptive use among women of reproductive age in Nasarawa State. The study will examine both urban and rural areas within the state to identify regional variations in awareness and contraceptive use. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data, as well as challenges in accessing remote communities for data collection.
